Torrent to set up power project in Amreli

By ENN, Ahmedabad: Leading private energy sector player Torrent Power Limited will set up a coal-based 1,000 MW power project in Amreli district.

The project capacity will be later increased to 2,000 MW.

A share holders agreement in this regard was signed today between Torrent Power Chairman Sudhir Mehta and Gujarat Power Corporation Limited Chairman D J Pandian, who is also Principal Secretary of Energy and Petrochemicals department of Gujarat government, a Company release said here.

Total investment for the project is estimated at Rs 4,500 crore.

The project will be implemented by March 2012 through a special purpose vehicle Torrent Pipavav Generation Limited. Memorandum of Understanding for the project was signed during 2007 Vibrant Gujarat Investors Summit.

The government had already acquired 267 hectares of private land, besides transferring 40 hectares of government land at Rampara and Uchaiya villages of Rajula taluka in Amreli district.
